Interesting day today racing for the Warwick Stephens Life Member event on the water at Warwick’s second home Lake Victoria. 18 starters, being a mixed brew of J’s and a couple of EC12’s to add colour to the fleet, the start line, and at every mark.
I had a lucky break landing Glen Church as RO doing most of the work whilst I had fun calling the start line as PRO. Two of the starts got a little crowded where I called about 4 boats over the line each time and no general recall both times. The deal being if you were over the line hidden behind other boats also over the line it was your lucky day.
Zero to 8 knots northerly for the first 5 heats, then a touch of nor’west for the last 3 heats. A windward leeward course for 5 heats, then a third mark which was preset in anticipation of the nor’westerly introduced to extend the windward beat for the last three heats. A total of 8 heats. Many rule infringements and many boats taking 360 degrees penalties which is a must in yacht racing – thank you.
The variable wind shifts had a big plus as it served up a variety of first 3 place finishers in each heat, but then isn’t that Victoria doing what Victoria does best.
You won’t believe it, but Polly had a comfortable win, with EC12 Cliff Bishop 2nd, and Dayele Hobson 3rd, proving that his recent success over many weeks is achieved with skill, not luck.
A lovely warm day with a bit of fun on the water. Can’t beat that. Bryan Treleaven
