The weather gods shone brightly today- well at least it was nice and sunny, it was a pity about the wind. The forecast was for 3km/h WNW dropping to 2 Km/h by 3.00pm and that was pretty much how it happened.
The lake was a glassy calm for most of the day, and the word ‘drifter’ was heard occasionally. Such conditions are particularly challenging for the Race Officials, but we were up for it. Anzan and I carefully designed a short triangular course, 1 lap, Mass Start, which assumed WNW conditions, boiled the urn, and got on with it.
After a short history lesson about Founders Day, 7 heats were held by just after 3.00pm. The first heat results should be treated as approximate, as the majority of the 25 boats crossed the line together and some problems recording so many so quickly were encountered. Things settled down a bit after that as everyone figured out the conditions, more or less, and some very competitive racing went on. Today we trialled an indicator marker at the first mark, the 4-boat lengths warning, which helped to some extent as it was usually pretty crowded down there. Your Race Officials remained in their position so were not party to any exchanges, but it seems everything went pretty smoothly.
The biscuits were either in short supply or really good, or both, as by the time I got in there they were all gone. Sigh. Overall a good day out, it was good to see Anzan again after she got distracted by golf lessons. I think she is discovering golf is even trickier than sailing, so she might be back soon!
Congratulations to podium placers Ron Bedyn, Jim Paterson and Polly, closely followed by Graeme Raxworthy, Glen Church, and Cliff Bishop.
