PRO race report for the CMYC  J class club champs 7/11/2026

15 sailors took part in the J class CMYC Club Championships.  The PRO (Cliff) set a course hoping that the north easterly breeze that prevailed at the time would stay for the rest of the day and thus set a course which was a windward/leeward with separate start and finish lines.  When the racing began it was initially for one lap as the breeze was light.  However, as the day progressed Victoria Lake did its usual tricks and the wind was oscillating at which stage even the breeze itself didn’t know which way it wanted to go.

Eventually it settled into a southerly and the course was changed to reflect this and the separate start line was removed.  Also the wind had increased in strength so the heats were extended to two laps.  We managed to complete 12 heats in total which allowed some heats to be dropped.

The heats themselves provided, in the most part, close racing to such an extent that the winner was decided by a dropped race, as both first and second place had the same number of points.  The PRO and his assistants used the Afleet programme which Vern Rolton kindly supplied but the PRO had planned ahead and we ended up with 3 tablets that could have done the job as backup.

The event concluded at 2pm where the skippers gathered over tea and biscuits and discussed the racing which everyone won their own heat.  As you would expect with the high calibre of sailors, penalties were taken when required.  The race officers only looked after the start/finish line. As mentioned before the winner was decided by countback and congratulations go to Polly with the runner up Jim.

My thanks to my assistants, Bob Torrie and Vern Rolton without whose assistance the event could not have been run. Thanks to the Club for trimming the tree which made our job a lot easier 😀
