25 April 2026. Club Racing. Mass Start. Anzac Day. Victoria
The programed racing for today was changed on the instructions of our Sailing Master, from relay racing to PRO’s choice, much to the delight of PRO Bryan Treleaven and RO Dayele Hobson.
Being Anzac Day, it was appropriate to reflect on how privileged we are to be a member of the oldest model yacht club in NZ founded 128 years ago, and being the second oldest model yacht club in the world. Our life in New Zealand as we have it today was only possible because of those who served our country overseas during the wars of which we honor on Anzac Day.
A silence of one minute was held to reflect on our brave personal’s achievements and losses in battles at war.
Flag Protocol today was NZ Ensign flown at masthead, CMYC Pennant on the left yard-arm and an Anzac Flag on the right yard-arm. In the absence of the Commodore and Sailing Master their pennants were not flown. Did we race our toy boats??? – yes of course we did.
Weatherwise, Days in late April don’t come much better than today, with the only downside being a very light 1 to 4 knot fluctuating northerly wind, which was very effective in mixing up the finishing positions beautifully for the entire fleet.
As expected from Bryan T only 2 marks were used, being the 2 marks we have been leaving out for as long as we can get away with. The start and finish marks were 40metres apart, to give a 40m longer first beat to windward, and a 40m longer last beat to the finish. This is very effective particularly when only one round can be sailed in light conditions, as it adds another 80 meters of windward sailing per heat.
Six heats were raced with the first 2 being twice round, the next 4 being once round. The fleet consisted of 17 yachts, with Cliff Bishop being the most consistent at the top end of the list with a well-earned victory over Ron Campbell 2nd, and Clyde Rogers 3rd who both gave Cliff a competitive hurry up in many races.
There were 5 different heat winners with Cliff being the only sailor to win 2 heats. Enjoy reading the results below. A happy fun day of racing – thank you Dayele for keeping the wheels on in the management department of the day.
Happy Sailing Bryan Treleaven
